      Well, I don’t make chemicals personally as I’m a physicist, but then I don’t make physicals either ;^)
      There aer lots of different procedures for obtaining different chemical substances – sometimes it’s just necessary to heat something up – if you let grapes ferment they produce alcohol and since alcohol evaporates more quickly than water, heating the fermented mixture and allowing the vapours that come off will produce alcohol – which is just a chemical substance. If you let sea-water evaporate you will be left with NaCl another chemical substance that we normally call salt.
      We do it to get things that are useful.
