I want to encourage children to discover things by themselves, and basically act as a scientist for the day, so I would set up a series of experiments for them to try out.
Most of the materials I study are magnetic so I would base the activities around magnets. I would get the children to try and make a magnet levitate (or float). I would set up experiments using ferrofluid (a magnetic liquid) which can make really pretty patterns when you pour it over a magnet. I would also get them to design a magnetic ball bearing launcher.
I also think a lot of people don’t realise that not all metals are magnetic, so I want to highlight that point as well. I basically want them to have a fun afternoon doing science!
