Atoms are made of a nucleus, which contains particles called protons and neutrons. The nucleus is surrounded by a cloud of electrons. The number of protons in the nucleus tells us which chemical element the atom belongs to, for example, iron always has 26 protons. The electron cloud allows atoms to stick to other atoms to form alloys, like steel.
