Hello, I worked in a supermarket and a charity shop whilst I was studying for my degree. I started working in science right after my studies so I haven’t had any other jobs. I’m sure the other scientists will have more interesting jobs to talk about!
Well, being a schoolboy and a university student don’t really count as professions.
Oh, while I was studying, during the holidays I worked in various factories, drove a lorry (not HGV) and did one Christmas stint as a postman. I don’t think these really count as professions either.
What I did do was to teach English as a foreign language for three years in Milan straight after graduating from Cambridge University in Physics. I was still only 20 and while I had already decided I wanted to be research physicist, I didn’t want to lock myself up to a desk that young.
It’s still a sort of scientific activity though: the science of learning is very interesting and how you can best help people learn a foreign language is not obvious, it takes a lot of experimentation.
I was a doctor’s receptionist for a while – lots of sick people!
I also ran the students’ union at university for a year – it’s the organisation that represents all the students to the university so that was good fun!
I’ve worked as a paramedic for some years before University. During University, I’ve worked with the Glasgow Festival Team, where I communicated science to the public with events around the year and peaking with the summer science festival.
